ANZAC PLAN - Created for Kaingaroa School Week 7/8.

Introduce the topic.
Share diary page and photo of my grandfather Laurence Edwin Austen. He fought in the second world war as a soldier in the NZ army. He fought in the Pacific, including Solomon Islands.  Share and pass around his medals with the list of what each medal represents.  Even though he came home from the war it never left him, I remember as a young girl him being very very sad remembering his lost friends. Sometimes there would be bad dreams and he would get ‘nervy’.

There is an online cenotaph where you an search for family members and leave a poppy. Demonstrate this by searching for Laurence Edwin Austen. Yes he is there, what can we see? His occupation and address before he commenced as a soldier. Next of kin.

Then talk about Frederick Rayner Baucke. He served in the Air Force also in the Solomon Islands. He returned from war and was killed after being home for just two weeks by a drunk driver. Search for him online and he doesn’t appear to be there????

Briefly watch the local soldiers clip of people who died from the Far North. Clip supplied by Naomi Austen-Reid. Take special note of familiar surnames from local places i.e. Waru from Whangape. Ihaka from Te Kao, Urlich from Kaingaroa?

Create a KWL Chart on the whiteboard.

What do we already know?  What would be like to know? What have we learnt?

Encourage students to write under the first question what they already know and then secondly what would they like to know? Leave the third column for later. (follow up to be done by the classroom teacher).

Hand around a freshly basked ANZAC biscuit to eat while watching the following two short clips.

Jack and Tom

What is ANZAC Day?

Now we have probably got information that will answer our questions, but we may need a little more research to provide accurate evidence.

Research and present a slide or slides to share with the class telling us about ANZAC Day and its significance. How do we celebrate ANZAC Day and any other interesting facts that you have discovered i.e. The Simpsons Donkey?
